Today, we are taking about the city of Subotica, Serbia, and we are excited to explore this charming city, especially since it marks our last day in this beautiful country. With a population of around 103,000, Subotica is among the smaller cities in Serbia, situated right on the border with Hungary.
What’s fascinating about Subotica is its rich history. Once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, about 37% of its residents have Hungarian roots and many also speak the language, giving the city a unique cultural blend. We are eager to discover what the city has to offer.
One of the highlights of our visit is the stunning City Hall of Subotica, built in the Hungarian Art Nouveau style and designed by two remarkable architects from Budapest. Completed around 1910, its architecture is truly unique and beautiful.
As you wander further into the city, we admire the beautiful architecture that graces the streets, which is impressive for a city of this size. The unique trees lining the streets almost appear as if they’ve stepped out of a Tim Burton film, adding a whimsical touch to our journey.
Of course, you couldn’t leave Serbia without trying one last burek. In Subotica, we discovered a pizza burek that we couldn’t resist trying. It features a different kind of cheese, perhaps Trappist cheese, alongside mushrooms, ham, and a rich tomato sauce. This unique twist on the traditional dish is absolutely delightful!
And then we enjoyed some delicious popcorn seasoned with “Vegeta,” a popular seasoning in the Balkans; it’s a delightful snack we’ve grown fond of during our travels.
You also should visit the Subotica Synagogue, another architectural gem built in a similar modern style, showcasing beautiful tiles and rich history.
In the evening, we dined at a Sarajevo restaurant in Subotica, relishing some delicious ćevapi and sausages. The bread was wonderfully toasted and complimented the flavorful meat beautifully.
As we wrap up our time in Subotica, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would highly recommend this serene city to travelers around the world.
